HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The New York Owner’s Guide

We stock and install HeatShield-compatible chimney caps across New York, with most replacements running between $340 and $690 installed, depending on flue size and roof access. If your cap is cracked, rusted through, or missing entirely, we can usually get a new one on within the same week. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, birds in the flue, or a rust stain running down the brick after a hard rain.

HeatShield caps are built to take New York weather, but nothing lasts forever against ice, salt air, and the freeze-thaw cycle that works on rooftop metals year after year. When the cap goes, the flue is open to everything: rain, snow, leaves, squirrels, and the occasional pigeon looking for a dry spot. Level Two Chimney New York has installed and replaced hundreds of these caps since 2009, and we document every one with photos before and after.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield chimney caps come in two broad configurations: slip-in caps that seat inside a round flue tile, and top-mount caps that fasten over the crown for multi-flue chimneys. The most common models we swap in New York are the HeatShield round slip-in caps for 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch flue tiles, plus the HeatShield top-mount caps sized for 8×8 through 13×13 clay tile footprints. If you don’t know your flue size, check the metal tag on the old cap, or look for the stamped number on the cap’s skirt. No tag? Measure the inside diameter of the flue opening so we don’t guess.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: HeatShield’s slip-in caps use a tension-ring fit that seats inside the flue tile, not over it. If your flue tile is oval or has spalled edges, the cap won’t grip properly and will work loose within a season. On older New York brownstones and pre-war homes, we sometimes need to square up the flue tile or switch the cap style entirely. We don’t push OEM parts when a better fit exists. The decision comes down to what’s on the roof, not what’s in a catalog.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Rust streaking on the crown or brick below the cap. This usually means the cap’s galvanized coating has worn through and water is now running off the cap itself. Left alone, the cap continues to corrode and the rust seeps into the brick, leaving a stain that’s harder to fix than the cap.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. A cap that’s cracked, shifted, or missing lets rain fall straight down the flue. In New York row houses and brownstones, we see this regularly after coastal storms, when wind-driven rain finds the flue opening.
  • Debris or nesting material at the base of the flue. Birds and squirrels don’t need much of an opening to get in. Once a nest is established, it can block draft and push smoke back into the room.
  • A cap that rattles or visibly moves in wind. The tension ring has lost grip, or the mounting screws have backed out. This happens faster on chimneys with cracked crowns, since the cap’s anchor points degrade along with the masonry.
  • Sparks or embers visible at the top of the chimney during use. The cap’s mesh screen has burned through or the cap itself has shifted, leaving a gap. On older HeatShield caps, the mesh is often the first thing to go, and it’s not repairable.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For HeatShield-compatible cap installation in New York, the as-written price breaks down into three parts: the cap itself, the roof-access work, and the documentation you get when we’re done. Here’s what that looks like on paper:

  • Slip-in HeatShield cap (6-inch to 8-inch flue): $340 to $490 installed.
  • Top-mount HeatShield cap (8×8 to 13×13 footprint): $490 to $690 installed.
  • New stainless mesh or spark arrestor add-on: $40 to $90.
  • Flue tile edge repair (if the cap seat is compromised): $60 to $140.

You get a written price before we start, with the cap style and size listed line by line. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1, and it’s not optional. After the install, you receive a photo record of the old cap off and the new cap on, plus the written warranty for the work. If the cap fails within a year, we make it right under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s the whole deal; there’s no estimate fee and no upsell on the phone.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a chimney cap involves standing on a roof, at height, with tools. That’s the honest safety note: this is not ladder-friendly work, especially on New York slate roofs, steep pitches, or anything above three stories. If your roof is walkable and the flue is a simple round tile, a careful homeowner can measure and swap a slip-in cap themselves. We won’t pretend otherwise.

What you can safely check on the ground: whether the cap is visibly cracked or missing, the inside flue diameter, and whether the crown around the cap is crumbling. What you shouldn’t do is attempt a top-mount cap replacement on a multi-flue chimney with a compromised crown, because the anchor points won’t hold and the cap becomes a projectile in a nor’easter. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call (551) 213-5548. We’ll put a set of trained eyes and a camera on it, and you’ll know exactly what the real condition is before any money changes hands.
