We install, replace, and repair Gelco chimney caps and crowns across New York City and the boroughs, usually within one to two weeks of your first call. How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
Gelco makes solid caps, but every brand has patterns. Here’s what we actually see on New York roofs, model by model:
- Gelco Multi-Flue Cap (MFC Series): Wind-driven rain blowback at the center seam. On wider chimneys in Manhattan and brownstone Brooklyn, the MFC’s center support brace catches New York’s prevailing northwest winter winds. Over time the seam sealant degrades and rain gets pushed sideways into the flue. We see this most often on three-flue Gelco installations in Queens and Riverdale. The fix is a re-seal with high-temp silicone and adding a wind baffle, not a full cap replacement.
- Gelco Single-Flue Caps with Screen (SFC Series): Creosote-glazed mesh reducing draft. Gelco’s stock mesh is fine enough to keep birds out, but on wood-burning fireplaces in older New York homes, it loads up with Class II glazed creosote faster than most owners expect. If your fireplace has been drafting poorly and you haven’t swept in two years, check the Gelco mesh before blaming the flue. We typically replace the mesh section with a slightly wider diamond pattern, which drafts better and still meets code.
- Gelco CrownCoat (GC Series): Hairline cracking along the crown’s drip edge. Gelco’s pre-cast crowns hold up well, but New York’s freeze-thaw cycle is unforgiving. Water gets into hairline cracks, freezes, and spalls the leading edge of the crown. This shows up as small concrete chips on the roof or in the gutter below the chimney. We repair with a two-coat elastomeric crown sealer and rebuild the drip edge before the spalling reaches the flue collar.
- Gelco Custom Copper Caps: Galvanic corrosion where copper meets the steel mounting brackets. We see this on higher-end Gelco installs in Westchester and the Upper East Side. The copper top is fine, but the stainless mounting hardware Gelco ships can react with copper if the caps were installed without isolation washers. The tell is a green crust around the bolt heads. Our fix is a hardware swap to coated fasteners plus a dielectric barrier, which stops the reaction without replacing the cap.
- Gelco Damper-Top Mounts (DTM Series): Failed spring mechanism after five to seven New York winters. These sit inside the flue mouth and get hammered by condensation from gas appliances. The spring corrodes, the damper stops seating, and you get a permanent draft or backdraft smell in the living room. Gelco sells a rebuild kit, and we usually recommend that before replacing the whole unit. When the housing itself is warped, then we quote the full replacement.

FAQs
No. Replacing a Gelco cap with another Gelco cap, or with a quality aftermarket equivalent, does not void the warranty on the chimney system itself. What voids warranties is improper installation, which is why we document the old part, the new part, and the torque-adjusted mounting hardware in your photo record. If Gelco ever asks, you have the file.
Most Gelco caps, mesh, and damper rebuild kits arrive at our New York warehouse within 3 to 7 business days. Custom copper caps take 2 to 3 weeks because they’re fabricated to the flue’s exact outside dimensions. We’ll tell you the lead time in writing before you approve the order.
Often, yes, but not always. If the crown has hairline cracking but no spalling, sealing it while we’re already on the roof is cheaper than a second service call later, and we price the combined job at a lower rate than two separate visits. If the crown is structurally sound, we don’t recommend touching it, and you’ll see the camera footage that supports that call.
Water in the firebox after rain usually means the crown is failing. Draft problems, bird or rodent entry, and rain coming directly down the flue usually mean the cap. The only way to know for sure in New York is a camera scan from the flue mouth down, which is exactly what we include on every visit. No one should diagnose a chimney from the ground.
