Gelco Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Crown Repair: The New York Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible crown repair parts across New York, with most jobs priced between $450 and $900 installed, and we can usually get to you within 3 to 5 business days for crown work. That price includes the part, the prep work, the installation, and a documented photo record before and after. Most owners find out their crown is failing when water stains show up on the ceiling near the flue, or when they notice chunks of mortar and concrete on the roof after a hard rain or a freeze-thaw cycle. New York winters are rough on crowns; the freeze-thaw swing we get every January and February is usually what cracks them open.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gelco crown replacement in New York typically runs $450-$900 installed, depending on flue size and how much of the old crown needs to come off.
  • We stock Gelco-compatible crown materials and can match most common Gelco liner and cap dimensions without a special order.
  • Every job includes a written price before work starts and a photo record when it’s done under Haven Standard Clause 4.
  • If the crown is cracked but the flue liner is intact, you may not need a full rebuild; we’ll show you the camera footage and let you decide.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes a range of stainless steel and galvanized cap-and-crown systems, and we’ve worked with most of the common series lines: the GC series caps, the Gelco multi-flue cap-and-crown combos, and the Gelco liner top plates that sit under the crown. The crown itself, the concrete or metal cap that seals the top of the chimney, is rarely a Gelco-branded part on its own. What usually fails is the interface between a Gelco cap or top plate and the masonry crown beneath it. If your setup uses a Gelco top plate with a poured concrete crown, the failure point is almost always the bond between the two; water gets in there, freezes, and spalls the crown apart. If you have a Gelco stainless crown, the issue is usually the fasteners or the silicone seal, not the metal itself.

To identify what you need, look at the underside of the cap or the top plate. Gelco stamps or etches a model number on most units made after 2012. If you can’t find it, measure the outside diameter of the flue tile, not the cap itself. A 6-inch flue tile takes a different top plate than a 7-inch, and a lot of New York chimneys built before 1970 have odd-sized flues that fall between standard Gelco sizes. That’s the compatibility gotcha we see most often: the masonry opening doesn’t match any standard Gelco footprint, so the crown has to be rebuilt around the flue rather than simply capped. We carry the common sizes on the truck. The uncommon ones we source through the same supplier network we use for DuraFlex and HeatShield liners, and we’ll show you the exact part and price before we order anything.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Water staining on the ceiling or walls near the chimney. This is the classic first signal. The crown’s whole job is keeping water out of the chase and off the flue liner. When it can’t, water travels down and shows up inside the house, usually on the drywall closest to the chimney run.
  • Chunks of concrete or mortar on the roof or in the gutter. Freeze-thaw cycles in New York attack crowns relentlessly. Once water gets into hairline cracks and freezes, it expands, and the crown starts shedding pieces. On roofs around the Upper West Side and Park Slope, we see this constantly, especially after a winter with a lot of temperature swings.
  • Rust staining on a Gelco cap or top plate. Gelco’s stainless parts resist rust, but the fasteners and the galvanized components don’t always. Rust lines running down from the cap usually mean the crown underneath is holding water and the drain path is blocked or the crown is cracked.
  • Draft problems that show up only in wet weather. A cracked crown lets water into the flue. That water mixes with creosote and soot, and suddenly the chimney doesn’t draw right when it’s damp out. If your fireplace behaves fine on dry days and smokes on rainy ones, the crown is a prime suspect.
  • Visible cracking or separation where the crown meets the flue tile. Look up from the roof. If you can see a gap between the masonry crown and the flue tile, or between the crown and a Gelco top plate, water is already getting in. The camera on our inspection run will confirm what’s going on below the surface.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

The installed price for a Gelco-compatible crown repair or replacement in New York runs from about $450 on the low end for a standard single-flue setup to $900 for a larger or multi-flue crown that needs significant tear-out and re-pour. What drives the range: flue size, whether the old crown needs to be fully demolished or just re-sealed, roof access difficulty (a brownstone roof with a steep pitch costs more than a flat-roof walk-up), and whether the Gelco cap or top plate is still usable or needs replacing too.

Here’s how the price breaks down on paper, before you commit:

  • Parts (Gelco-compatible top plate or cap, if needed): $150-$300
  • Masonry crown material and re-pour or patch: $200-$450
  • Labor and sealing: $100-$200

You get a written price with the scope broken out like that, delivered before we touch anything; a written warranty on the work; and a photo record of the crown before, during, and after. That’s Clause 1 and Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, and we’ve worked that way since 2009. The warranty on the crown work itself: if it fails within the covered period, we make it right under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s stamped on every job in New York we complete.

You can inspect a crown from the roof safely if you’re comfortable on a ladder and the roof pitch is gentle. What you’re looking for: visible cracks, gaps around the flue tile, spalled or missing concrete, and rust stains on the Gelco cap. You can take photos from the roof edge without climbing onto the crown. That’s useful information to have when you call. What you should not do is attempt a crown repair yourself from the roof. It requires working at height, often near a parapet or on a pitched surface, and the materials involved (concrete mix, bonding agents, sometimes a torch for sealing) are not forgiving. If the flue liner is damaged underneath the crown, you need a camera to see it, and that’s not a DIY tool. We’ll come out, run the camera down the flue under an NFPA 211 Level 2 inspection, and show you exactly what’s wrong before we quote anything. Corrine Halstead has spent the better part of two decades making that call on New York chimneys, and the camera doesn’t argue with you, and neither does the price sheet.
