Famco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Damper Repair: The New York Owner’s Guide

Famco damper repair in New York typically runs $285-$540 installed, depending on the model and whether we’re replacing the plate, the frame, or the full assembly. Our trucks carry the common Famco replacement parts, so most repairs are completed in a single visit. The way most New York homeowners discover a failed Famco damper isn’t dramatic: a draft that won’t quit, a utility bill that climbed through January, or a chimney sweep pointing at the camera feed and saying, “There’s your problem.”

Famco dampers are common in New York because they’re affordable and field-serviceable, but after eight to twelve years of heating-season cycles, the cast iron plate warps or the cable mechanism binds. What starts as a stiff pull chain becomes a plate that won’t seat, and a plate that won’t seat is a flue that never fully closes. That’s the whole job in one sentence: a damper that doesn’t close is a hole in your house that opens onto the sky.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

The Famco line most of our New York customers have is the standard cast iron throat damper, sold in sizes from 6-inch to 13-inch widths, with the LD and MD series being the most common in older New York homes. Famco also produces a top-sealing damper line, and the two systems fail differently: throat dampers warp and bind at the plate, while top-sealing dampers fail at the gasket or the cable pulley. If you’re not sure which you have, look at the frame stamped into the metal when you open the damper; Famco stamps the size and model number on the underside of the plate or on the mounting frame.

Compatibility is the part where online ordering goes wrong. A 9-inch measurement across the front doesn’t mean you have a 9-inch Famco damper; the size refers to the flue opening, not the plate width. A plate that measures 9-1/4 inches across the face is usually a 9-inch unit with a 1/8-inch reveal per side. If the frame is sound, we can often just swap the plate and save the cost of a full assembly; if the frame has sagged or the welds have let go, a plate-only repair won’t hold a seal and we’ll tell you before you spend a dollar.

OEM Famco plates and frames are what we stock for the common sizes. For less common sizes, we use Copperfield equivalents, which are dimensionally identical and hold up the same in New York conditions. The one place we won’t compromise is the linkage hardware: the aftermarket springs are noticeably softer and don’t hold tension through a full season. We use the Famco spring kit on every repair, regardless of where the plate came from.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing
  • Cold air pours down the chimney even when the damper is “closed.” The plate has warped or the frame seal has widened. A cast iron plate warps unevenly, so you’ll get a crescent-shaped gap along one edge, which is visible on a camera but not from the firebox.
  • The handle or cable moves but the plate doesn’t respond. The linkage rod has sheared at the clevis pin, or the spring has lost tension. This is the most common failure we see on New York Famco installations older than ten years.
  • The plate slams shut on its own. The retaining nut on the linkage has backed off, which lets the plate drop freely. It’s loud enough to wake a sleeping dog, and it’s usually the warning sign before the linkage fully separates.
  • You hear a metallic rattle inside the chimney when the wind picks up. The plate is loose in the frame, which means either the pivot pins are wearing or the frame ears have spread. In New York, the freeze-thaw cycles on exterior chimneys accelerate this specific failure.
  • Visible rust trails run down from the damper onto the firebox floor. Condensation from an unlined flue is dripping onto the plate and rusting the linkage hardware. That’s not a damper problem alone; it signals a liner condition we’d want to see with a camera before making the repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In New York, our Famco damper repair pricing breaks down like this:

  • Plate and linkage replacement (LD/MD series, common sizes): $285-$395 installed
  • Full assembly replacement, frame included: $420-$540 installed
  • Top-sealing damper cable and gasket repair: $310-$460 installed

Every price is written down before we start, with the part number, the labor line, and the warranty term spelled out. That’s Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, and it applies whether the repair takes forty minutes or half a day. What’s included regardless of which repair path you take: removal of the old plate, linkage inspection, replacement hardware (Famco spring kit included), a function test with the plate opened and closed on camera, and a photo record of the finished repair that becomes part of your inspection history with us.

The warranty on Famco damper repair work is one year on parts and labor, backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If anything we installed fails within the year, we come back and fix it. The price you agreed to is the price you pay; there’s no dispatch fee, no trip charge, and no surprise line item after the work is done.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can check whether the plate seats properly by opening and closing it a few times from the firebox, and you can take a phone photo of the plate and the frame to show us what you’re working with. What you should not do is try to pull the damper plate yourself. The retaining hardware on a Famco damper is under spring tension, and the plate is cast iron; if the linkage releases while you’re working in the firebox, you’re taking thirty pounds of iron to the face or hands. We’ve seen the results of that on enough service calls to be direct about it, and Corrine Halstead won’t tell you otherwise: the camera doesn’t argue with you, and neither does the price sheet.

If you want to know what’s wrong before we touch anything, call us at (551) 213-5548 and ask for a camera inspection. We’ll find the failure, show it to you on the screen, and write up the repair with the part number and price before we start.
