Most owners discover the cap has failed the same way: they see rust staining on the chimney crown, hear a clanking sound during a storm, or spot a gap where the cap once sat tight.
The short version is this: a Famco cap in New York faces weather most caps never see. Freeze-thaw cycles, salt air near the rivers, and pigeon pressure from every rooftop flock. When it fails, it fails at the fasteners first, then the mesh, then the lid. You’ll almost always know before it becomes a flue problem. Here’s what matters.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco makes four cap lines we regularly install in New York: the SC (single-flue, square or round), the TSC (top-screen convertible), the EC (economy, for straight clay flues), and the LDS (large dome, for oversized masonry flues). The compatibility gotcha most people miss: the SC and TSC use different base attachments. The SC clamps to the outside of the flue tile with a tension band. The TSC sits inside the tile. If your flue is square and you order a round TSC, it will not fit, no matter how hard the previous owner tried.
Our advice: look for the stamped model number on the underside of the cap’s base. Famco stamps most caps with a faint “SC-13” or “TSC-8” marking. If it’s gone, measure the flue tile’s outside dimensions for a clamp-style cap, or the inside opening for a slip-in. We match those numbers. We also stock aftermarket equivalents from Gelco that fit Famco footprints when you want a heavier gauge lid, and we’ll tell you the price difference before you choose. On the OEM side, Famco caps are reliably built but the standard galvanized finish struggles after seven to ten winters in New York. That’s not a knock on the brand. It’s what the salt and sleet do to zinc coating.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- You hear a clanking or rattling during wind. The tension band has loosened, or a bolt has sheared from years of thermal expansion. The cap is still on the flue, but not for long.
- Rust streaks run down the chimney crown. The galvanized finish is failing, and the steel underneath is oxidizing. The structural lid is compromised even if it holds its shape.
- The mesh sides are bent, torn, or pulled away from the frame. A torn mesh is the point of failure that matters most: birds and squirrels can now enter the flue, and a nest in the wrong spot can block draft entirely.
- You notice water in the firebox after heavy rain. The cap’s lid is no longer shedding water, or the base seal has failed. In New York, this is often misdiagnosed as a crown or liner issue when the cap was the actual leak.
- The cap is missing entirely. It happens more than you’d think. A strong nor’easter or a low-hanging branch can tear a weakened cap clean off. If you see an open flue, call before the next rain.

What you can safely do from the ground or a ladder that does not require roof access: read the model stamp on the underside of the cap, measure the flue opening, and take photos of rust, bent mesh, or missing sections. That’s useful information, and it saves time on the estimate call.
What you should not do is climb onto a New York roof to replace the cap yourself. Chimney caps on most rowhouses and brownstones sit at a height and pitch where one misstep is a hospital visit.
