On OEM versus aftermarket: Gelco caps are good steel, but in New York’s wet-freeze cycle, the screen mesh corrodes years before the hood does, regardless of who made the cap. Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust streaks below the cap on the brick or crown. The steel base or screen has started oxidizing, and every rain carries that rust down onto the masonry. It’s cosmetic now, structural soon.
• Water pooling inside the firebox after storms. If the cap hood is intact but water is getting in, the base seal has failed, or the cap was sized wrong from the start. We find this constantly on flips and quick resales in New York, where the cap was installed for curb appeal, not for fit.
• Chirping, scratching, or fluttering sounds inside the flue. The screen mesh has a tear or the side rails have pulled loose, and birds or bats are getting in. We remove the nests, not just the cap, and we’ll show you photos before we quote the fix.

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re comfortable on a ladder and your roof is walkable, you can safely photograph the cap, measure the flue tile, and check the screen mesh from the roofline without touching anything. That’s useful. What’s not useful is pulling the old cap yourself. We see DIY removals where the base screws strip, the masonry drill wanders into the flue tile, or the owner gets a rusted screw and a bad angle on a pitched roof and ends up making the repair bigger than the original job.
