Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Trusted Chimney Liner & Rebuild for New York Homeowners

A flue liner in a New York chimney fails in one of two ways: it cracks from decades of thermal cycling, or it was undersized for the appliance to begin with. When that happens, the chimney stops doing its job. Heat, carbon monoxide, and creosote move into places they were never meant to go. Level Two Chimney New York has performed Chimney Liner & Rebuild in New York across all five boroughs since 2009, with more than 38,000 inspections completed under the Haven Standard. We show you the condition of your flue on camera before we recommend a single dollar of work, and every liner or rebuild scope is priced in writing before anything starts. Call (551) 213-5548 to schedule an inspection.

What Our Chimney Liner & Rebuild Service Includes

Chimney liner and rebuild work covers a range of conditions, from a single cracked tile to a flue that has deteriorated past the point of safe repair. What follows is what we actually do, and when each approach applies. None of it is recommended without camera evidence. Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires a documented photo record on every visit, and that record is yours before any recommendation is made.

Stainless Steel Liner

A stainless steel liner is a rigid or flexible alloy tube installed inside the existing flue to restore a continuous, insulated exhaust path. This is the right fix when the original clay tiles are cracked but the surrounding masonry is still structurally sound. We install liners from Olympia Chimney and DuraFlex, sized to the exact BTU output of your furnace, boiler, or fireplace, and we document the full installation with before and after camera footage.

Stainless Steel Liner

Flexible Liner

A flexible liner works when the flue has offsets or bends that would make a rigid liner impractical. The flexible alloy snakes through the existing passage and is then insulated to maintain draft temperature. In older New York brownstones and prewar buildings, including Chimney Liner & Rebuild - Long Island City projects, we regularly install flexible liners where chimney geometry simply won’t accommodate anything rigid.

Flexible Liner

Liner Replacement

Liner replacement removes the failed liner and installs a new one, rather than repairing the old material in place. This is the standard approach when the existing liner shows vertical cracking, spalling, or separation at the joints. We’ll show you the failed sections on camera before we quote a replacement, and the written scope lists exactly which liner material and diameter we’re specifying.

Liner Replacement

Partial Rebuild

A partial rebuild addresses the section of chimney that has failed without tearing down sound masonry below it. This typically means rebuilding from the roofline up, or reconstructing the smoke chamber and throat where heat concentrates. Partial rebuilds in New York are common after water intrusion freezes and spalls the top courses of brick. We rebuild to current code, including a proper concrete crown and flashing detail, and we photograph every stage of the work.

Partial Rebuild

Full Chimney Rebuild

A full rebuild is what happens when the structural masonry itself has lost integrity from the firebox to the crown. This is not a liner job; it is a demolition and masonry reconstruction. We see this most often in New York where chimneys were built without proper dampers or caps, and decades of rain have worked through the brick. The written scope for a full rebuild includes material specifications, staging, scaffold requirements, and a completion date before we break ground.

Full Chimney Rebuild

Liner Repair

Liner repair works when the damage is localized: a single cracked tile, a failed joint, or a deteriorated section near the top of the flue. We use HeatShield cerfractory sealant systems and stainless steel repair components depending on what the camera shows. If the repair won’t restore a safe flue, we’ll say so plainly and explain why replacement is the only responsible option.

Brands We Service for Chimney Liner & Rebuild

Brands We Service for Chimney Liner & Rebuild

We work with Olympia Chimney and DuraFlex stainless steel liner systems on the majority of our relining jobs in New York. Both manufacturers produce alloy liners that carry lifetime warranties when installed to their listed specifications, and we’ve installed hundreds of them across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens since 2009. Our technicians are trained on the manufacturer’s installation requirements, including insulation, termination, and connection details.

For repair work, we use HeatShield cerfractory material, which is tested and listed for flue repair and resurfacing. The material is applied after the flue is cleaned to bare substrate, and we document the cured result with a camera pass. Whether you have one of these systems in place or an older clay tile flue that needs attention, we can assess it and give you a written recommendation.

Signs You Need Chimney Liner & Rebuild Right Now

  • Flakes of tile in the firebox. If you’re finding pieces of clay tile at the bottom of your fireplace, the flue liner is spalling. The pieces are falling because the liner has cracked, and the chimney is no longer safely containing combustion gases.
  • Visible staining on interior walls near the chimney. Dark streaks or damp patches on the wall adjacent to the flue mean moisture and possibly combustion byproducts are migrating through the masonry. In New York’s freeze-thaw climate, trapped moisture in a chimney wall causes brick to fail from the inside out.
  • A smell like a campfire in the house during summer. That odor is creosote off-gassing through a cracked or unlined flue. It indicates the liner is no longer sealed, and the same path that lets smell through can let carbon monoxide through during heating season.
  • White staining on the exterior brick. Efflorescence means water is moving through the masonry and dissolving salts. The chimney is absorbing water, and in a New York winter that water freezes and expands, accelerating spalling and eventual structural failure.
  • Rust on the damper or fireplace doors. Rust indicates excessive moisture in the flue, which is a symptom of a failed cap, crown, or liner. Left alone, the rust is followed by liner deterioration and masonry damage that turns a repair into a rebuild.

Our Chimney Liner & Rebuild Process - Step by Step

Our Chimney Liner & Rebuild Process - Step by Step
  1. 1
The camera inspection. We run a camera down the entire flue from the roof or firebox and record the full pass. You see the footage. We see the footage. Nothing is recommended that we can’t show you. This is the NFPA 211 Level 2 standard and it is standard on every visit we make in New York.
  2. 2
The written scope and price. After the camera work, we walk you through what was found in plain terms: flue condition, crown integrity, creosote class if present, and liner material condition. Then we write the scope and price. Clause 1 of the Haven Standard requires a written price, written scope, and written warranty before anyone starts work.
  3. 3
Prep and protection. On the scheduled day, the assigned technician arrives in uniform, with license information on file and a text sent before arrival. We seal the work area floor with protective covering, set up dust control, and confirm the scope with you before we begin.
  4. 4
The liner installation or rebuild. For liners, we remove any portions of the old flue that obstruct installation, lower the new liner, connect it to the appliance or fireplace, insulate, and terminate it at the cap. For rebuilds, we dismantle to sound masonry, then reconstruct with new brick, tooled joints, and a properly poured concrete crown. Photographs document every phase.
  5. 5
The documented record. At completion, we run a final camera pass so you can see the finished flue from top to bottom. You receive the photo record, the written warranty, and a completed scope confirmation. Every inspection and cleaning we’ve done since 2009 has ended this way, and that practice became Clause 4 of the Haven Standard.

How Much Does Chimney Liner & Rebuild Cost in New York?

A stainless steel liner installation in New York typically runs $2,800 to $5,500 depending on flue height, liner diameter, roof access, and whether we’re relining for a boiler, furnace, or fireplace. See how much Chimney Liner & Rebuild costs for more detail. Liner repair using HeatShield or localized stainless components runs $900 to $2,400. A partial rebuild from the roofline up starts around $3,500 and can reach $8,000 when the smoke chamber is included. A full chimney rebuild in New York ranges from $9,000 to $25,000, driven by height, scaffold requirements, brick selection, and whether the flue needs relining as part of the job. These prices assume standard access; a chimney on a six-story Financial District building with a steep roof or a Brownstone party wall will land higher.

What affects the price most is access and existing condition, not our markup. A chimney that was maintained with a proper cap and crown costs less to repair than one that has been open to rain for a decade. We keep material costs honest by procuring from DuraFlex, Olympia Chimney, and HeatShield through the Haven buying network specifically so customer prices stay where they should be.
